Pampering a Senior Dog

Senior dogs have a special place in our hearts. They’re not only super cute, they are also typically very sweet and affectionate. Fido’s golden years are definitely a special time. Your loyal pet will need some extra TLC as he ages, however. Here, a Columbia, MD vet discusses senior dog care.

Comfy Beds

Older dogs often get quite stiff and sore. Make sure Fido has a comfy bed to snuggle up in. We recommend orthopedic beds for senior pooches, because of the extra support they offer.

Suitable Exercise

While Fido may not be as bouncy or playful as he used to be, he’ll still need some sort of activity. Even a short daily walk will help keep your pet’s bones and muscles strong.

Veterinary Care

Just like people, dogs sometimes develop medical issues as they age. Fido may need to see the vet more often. At home, watch for signs of illness. If you notice anything unusual, call your vet immediately. Modern veterinary medicine offers some wonderful treatments that can manage pets’ illnesses, reduce their pain, and improve their quality of life. However, the sooner an issue is caught and treated, the better!

Temperature

Fido will become more sensitive to extreme temperatures as he ages. Limit his outdoor time when it’s really hot or cold out.

Proper Diet

Making sure your canine buddy is eating the right type and amount of food is very important. Obesity is a common problem in aging pooches. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard. If Fido becomes obese, he’ll face some serious health risks. Your pup may also benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Paw Care

Overgrown nails can cause Fido to adjust his stride. This can put a lot of stress on his bones and joints. Keep those claws clipped!

Raised Bowls

Raised dishes may be easier for Fido to eat from than regular bowls. Give your canine friend’s dinnerware a pupgrade!

Pet Ramps

Fido may have trouble climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, and hopping on and off beds and couches. Pet ramps or stairs will help him move around more easily.

Love

Keep Fido’s cute tail wagging by paying him lots of attention. Don’t skimp on the belly rubs and ear scritches, either!
