Boarding Your Dog

Dogs are very faithful pets. Your canine buddy would no doubt hang out with you 24/7 if he could! However, Fido can’t go everywhere with you. Sooner or later, you may need to put your pet in a kennel. Read on as an Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on boarding Fido.

When To Board

Most people only board their pups when they go out of town. However, there are other times you may want to consider boarding Fido. Major life events, such as weddings and births, can get pretty hectic. You may find it easier to put your pooch in a hotel for a few days, so you can focus on the big event while knowing he’s safe and sound. Moving day is another time when you may want to consider boarding. That way, your furry friend won’t be underfoot as your things are being carried in and out. Other times when boarding can be helpful are after major medical procedures, and during quick but hectic home renovations, such as painting or replacing a carpet.

Choosing The Kennel

You don’t want to trust just anyone with the care of your beloved pet. Do some research, and ask for recommendations. Also, stop into the kennel, and get an idea of how they operate. Keep in mind that any decent kennel will require proof of Fido’s vaccinations. The only exception here would be if you board with your vet, as they would have those records on file.

Getting Ready

There are a few things you’ll want to clarify before bringing Fido in. Ask what you should pack. Some kennels allow clients to bring bedding and toys, while others prefer to use their own supplies. Pack extra food and medication, in case you are delayed. Also, give any specific instructions very clearly, both vocally and in writing, and make sure that the kennel has correct contact information for you. It’s a good idea to confirm business hours for drop-offs and pickups as well. Last but not least, ask about perks and upgrades.

Tips

It’s never easy saying goodbye to your furry best friend, even if for just a few days. However, don’t drag out your farewell. This will just make it harder on both you and Fido!
